College Cup Sailing Event 2024: A Recap of the Action-Packed Regatta
The waters of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) witnessed thrilling competition on Sunday, April 28th, as crews from various colleges gathered for the annual College Cup. With a promising breeze forecasted at 8-12 knots, anticipation was high for a day of competitive sailing. Despite the slightly lighter winds, ranging from 6-10 knots, the conditions proved excellent for the five races that ensued.
Aquinas College assembled a formidable crew comprising eight dedicated sailors, ready to take on opponents from Scotch, Trinity, Wesley, and Christchurch. The competition was fierce, with each race showcasing tight battles and strategic maneuvers.
In Race 1, Wesley College surged ahead, but Aquinas, under the skillful helming of Simon Haywood, diligently defended their position, ultimately clinching victory across the finish line. The closeness of the finish, with all boats crossing within 15 seconds of each other, underscored the intensity of the competition.
Race 2 witnessed Wesley's dominance once more, with Aquinas settling for fourth place behind Christchurch and Scotch A. However, Aquinas bounced back in Race 3 after overcoming an early setback due to a protest. Despite starting at the back of the fleet, Tony Jack's steady helming propelled them to fifth place, with Wesley again claiming line honors.
The helm changed hands in Race 4, with Richard Maher taking charge and demonstrating a keen understanding of the wind and rival boats. Maher's adept steering secured Aquinas a strong position, with only Wesley managing to edge past them at the finish line.
Race 5 saw Richard Maher back at the helm, leading a determined crew effort that culminated in Aquinas crossing the line first, closely followed by Wesley. Despite their valiant efforts, Aquinas ultimately conceded the Cup to Wesley College, finishing a commendable second overall.
The Aquinas crew, comprising Simon Haywood, Kevin Cunningham, Tony Jack, Richard Maher, Ben Fitzhardinge, David Cunningham, Trevor Jack, and Phil Willis, showcased exceptional teamwork and skill throughout the event. Their performance was bolstered by the support boat managed by Ian Burvill and the backing of the Old Aquinians Association, which generously supported the entry fee.
Looking ahead to the next year's event, the Aquinas team remains determined to claim the coveted Cup and the Rum Barrel. With their sights set on further success, they bid farewell to this year's competition, eagerly anticipating the challenges and triumphs that await them in 2025.
