As part of the commitment to service learning, Aquinas College has taken its mission global with the 13th Philippines Immersion. This initiative allows students to engage deeply with Filipino culture while making a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.
Embracing Filipino Culture
During the 15-day immersion, students lived with local families, forming bonds that transcended cultural barriers. This unique experience enabled them to gain firsthand insights into the warmth and resilience of the Filipino spirit. Participants noted that these connections fostered life-long friendships with their host students, enriching their understanding of community and compassion.
Making a Difference
The immersion program emphasised direct service, with students contributing to the well-being of children and the impoverished. Over the course of the trip, they served a remarkable 3,000 meals, donated 1,400 kilograms of rice, and provided essential school supplies and basic medicines to those in need. Walking through the slums of Malate and Tondo, students were confronted with stark realities: the pervasive smell of toxic air and the sight of littered streets starkly contrasted with the vibrant lives of the community members.
Yet, amidst these challenges, students discovered hope. They found a preschool serving 350 meals a day, showcasing the resilience and dedication of local educators in nurturing the next generation despite limited resources.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Engagement with the community extended beyond food and supplies. Students learned to communicate with children at the Anawim Foundation, a special education centre for deaf children, through sign language, further broadening their understanding of diversity and inclusion.
Reflections on the Experience
Participants expressed profound insights from their experiences. Lucas Lau, a Year 11 student, reflected, “The Philippines Immersion was a testament to human experience, depicting the intricacies of the Filipino spirit and culture; one that was so distinct and exotic, yet beautiful.” He emphasised how the immersion solidified the importance of service in their lives, an integral part of the Aquinas tradition.
Samuel Johnston, also in Year 11, added, “True human compassion and spiritual wealth cannot be felt until dire financial poverty is experienced.” He noted that while the Filipino families they stayed with may not possess material wealth, they overflow with rich cultural traditions centred around dance, music, food, and celebration.
A Memorable Adventure
Beyond service, the immersion offered students moments of adventure and exploration, including swimming in breathtaking waterfalls that showcased the natural beauty of the Philippines.
The Philippines Immersion at Aquinas College stands as a testament to the power of service, cultural exchange, and the lasting bonds forged through shared experiences. As students return home, they carry with them not just memories, but a renewed commitment to embodying the spirit of service in their own lives.
